Guppyfriend: sacca proteggi biancheria ecologico

What is the GUPPYFRIEND® bag?

The GUPPYFRIEND laundry bag is a scientifically proven and patented solution to microplastic fiber pollution during washing, and the only one that protects both clothes and the environment.

The GUPPYFRIEND® laundry bag significantly reduces fiber breakage. Clothes are protected and can be worn for longer.

It captures broken plastic fibers and releases none.

It reminds us to change our washing and shopping habits

  • 1. Fill

Place the synthetic garments to be washed in the GUPPYFRIEND® bag.

Fill the bag to about ⅔ full, so the fabrics can move around easily.

  • 2. Close and Wash

Close the GUPPYFRIEND® bag and put it directly in the washing machine. Add other non-synthetic garments or a second full GUPPYFRIEND® bag to prevent an imbalance. Wash as usual at 40°C maximum. Use eco-friendly detergents. You can download the guide here.

  • 3. Download and Empty

Empty the washing machine and remove the clothes from the GUPPYFRIEND® while they are still wet.

  • 4. Remove and Relax

Remove the fibers collected inside the filter fabric by hand and dispose of them in the general waste.
And relax, knowing you did the right thing!

  • 5. What to Avoid

Do not rinse under running water - to avoid releasing microplastics
Do not wash items with sharp edges -
    Do not iron
    Do not tumble dry
Do not hang or dry in direct sunlight

The sustainable washing guide

Washing guide to prevent microfibres from being released into the environment

THE STOP! MICRO WASTE GUIDE

#1 AVOID CLOTHES THAT CONTAIN PLASTIC!
BUY LESS, BUT BETTER!

Think about what you really need before you buy. Check the label and avoid synthetic fabrics such as polyester, acrylic and nylon. Be critical of misleading advertising. Also ask your local shop and your favourite brand about microfibre-free alternatives. They need to know you care.

#2 STAY COOL!
WASH COLD!

Some habits are long overdue for a change: washing coloured clothes at 40°C and bed linen at 60°C. In the vast majority of cases, 30°C is enough. Water combined with heat weakens the yarn. The process known as hydrolysis causes much more plastic to end up in our oceans.

#3 WASH LESS!

Air out your clothes and hand-wash stains to avoid unnecessary washing. Don’t let convenience harm marine life and our health.

#4 NO SPIN!
REDUCE THE SPIN SPEED!

A lot of friction occurs during the spin cycle. Synthetic fabrics dry quickly. Skip the spin cycle or at least reduce the spin speed (revolutions per minute) to protect your clothes and the environment.

#5 NO SHOES!
DON’T WASH SOLID ITEMS WITH YOUR LAUNDRY!

Fibres break because of the mechanical forces inside the washing machine. Washing anything solid with your clothes causes significantly more fibres to break. Avoid items such as shoes and shin guards. Using laundry balls and soap nuts—even with good intentions—also leads to more plastic in the ocean

#6 LIGHT WITH LIGHT! SOFT WITH SOFT.
SEPARATE FABRICS WITH HARD AND SOFT SURFACES!

This relates to the previous rule and is based on the same idea: Separate fabrics with a hard surface from those with a soft surface. If you stop washing items such as jeans and fleece garments in the same load, you’ll reduce your contribution to laundry-related microplastic pollution.

#7 CLOTHES DON’T GO IN THE DRYER!
DON’T TUMBLE-DRY YOUR CLOTHES!

The heat and mechanical forces inside a tumble dryer also contribute to microplastic pollution. Synthetic clothes dry very quickly anyway. Air-dry your clothes. If you have to use a tumble dryer, make sure to filter the condensed water.

#8 BE QUICK!
WASH FOR LESS TIME!

The longer you wash, the more fibres break. All washing machines have a short wash cycle. Use it.

#9 GREEN DETERGENTS!
USE LESS DETERGENT, AND USE IT BETTER!

Look for a detergent with a neutral pH and no bleach.

#10 USE A FILTER AND A GUPPYFRIEND WASHING BAG!

Filter your wastewater: Install a filter on your washing machine outlet. Use Guppyfriend. It prevents microfibres from entering the oceans. Using it means fewer fibres break, which also extends the life of your fabrics. Any fibres that do break are reliably trapped.
