To some extent, and it is right to be clear about the difference. What citric acid does in the laundry: it sequesters the limescale from the wash water, neutralizes alkaline detergent residues, and reduces fabric stiffness caused by calcium deposits. In hard water (as in many areas of Italy, including the North), the effect is clearly noticeable: the laundry feels softer to the touch and less "cardboard-like". What citric acid DOES NOT do: it does not deposit a lubricating film on the fibers (a typical function of traditional fabric softeners) and it does not scent the laundry. In short: if you notice the laundry is stiff mainly due to limescale, citric acid can functionally replace fabric softener. If you are looking for the intense fragrance and the "cottony" feel of traditional fabric softeners, citric acid will give a different, more natural, less "cosmetic" effect on the laundry.
